Tonight kicked off the first PTA meeting of the school year and I was very excited to see 4 of our classmates come out with their parents to this very informative meeting. All 4 of them received a free homework pass to be used for an assignment of their choice. Way to go Nicholas, Jonathan, Melanie, & Shivan! Check out www.collinspta.net for more info on our awesome PTA!
Next week we will be learning about Johnny Appleseed as part of a unit on apples. Some of our activities will include: map skills of his route, making observations of an apple with skin and one without skin, measuring out ingredients to make homemade applesauce, as well as graphing favorite types of apples and apple creations. In order to accomplish these activities, I am asking each child to bring in 2 apples by Tuesday September 22nd. They sometimes have them in the lunchroom with the breakfast choices (for FREE) in case you forget to grab some this weekend.
I will also be sending out miderm grades next Wednesday. The official conference night isn't until November 10th. However I would be more than happy to meet with any of you prior to that if you want to discuss your child's progress. Tuesdays are not good because we have staff meetings. I can either do 2:30 to 3:00 PM on any other day or before school from 7:10 to 7:30 AM. Another option is a phone conference during those time slots. Simply jot me a note in your child's planner and we'll set it up!
Thank you so much for sharing your precious child with me, they're wonderful!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lewis

Hello friends! I hope that everyone enjoyed their extra day off!!! Last week we had our first spelling test and I am so proud of everyone's score! It was quite obvious that each child studied those words and utilized their spelling spirals - parents, pat yourselves on the back for helping your child feel successful and supporting his/her education.
Even though this week is a short week, it is going to be a full one. Remember last week when your child got to visit another classroom in order for me to administer the FAIR test? Well, over the course of the next 2 weeks, the rest of the first grade teachers need to do the same thing. That means that our classroom will get to host some new friends and show them how awesome we are in room 316! Since we follow the curriculum calendars, we will move forward with our lessons and take our new friends along for the ride. My class did an awesome job visiting the different rooms so I know that they will set a good example when we get to have some company this week.
I'd like to thank you all for checking the planner each night and keeping me updated on any changes, such as going home a different way and appointments, etc. Not only did I get the best first graders, I got awesome parents, too!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lewis
